Spiros Panigirakis: Variables

11 March - 23 April 2022
Overview

Variables is an exhibition of desks, door and shirts by Spiros Panigirakis that explores how bureaucratic systems and problematic masculinities are expressed in the design of fashion and furniture. The project uses Franz Kafka’s novel The Trial as a starting point, interpreting characters’ visceral experiences within various authoritarian structures, queering the narrative, and challenging some of the masculine archetypes of the original text.

Panigirakis has developed and designed garments in relation to his practice with fashion designer Danielle Herbert. Variables focuses on the dystopian links between the desk and the business shirt, examining social hierarchies in relation to dominant systems and their potential for dysfunction.

Variables is presented as part of the Paypal Melbourne Fashion Festival Independent Program.
