Tony Garifalakis: Cover Ups
Sarah Scout Presents is delighted to make a selection of Tony Garifalakis's renowned Cover Ups (2012) available for the first time.
These works were originally conceived during a studio residency at the renowned International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York in 2008. What began with an interest in censorship as a form of government control evolved into a series of pictorial interventions, with Garifalakis covering up images sourced from magazines and movie posters so that only remnants remain visible through layers of black paint.
Epitomising Garifalakis's ongoing interest in power relations, these works take on additional meaning and affect during our charged contemporary social and political contexts.
Each hand and spray painted acrylic on movie poster is a unique work and is available to acquire framed or unframed.
$5,000 (inc gst) unframed

Tony Garifalakis, Dull Day, 2102, acrylic paint on poster
The process used to make these works refers to and mimics the one employed by government agencies to censor sensitive material in declassified documents, i.e. the bold black line through sensitive information/text. By employing this textual process in a pictorial format and eradicating elements of the original image, its intended representation and ‘message’ are all but dispensed with, providing only an elusive trace of its source.

From the Archive
Ghetto Triumvirate, 2012Tony Garifalakis's uses found images of music and film stars, prominent public and media figures, royal figures and politicians in order to engage with notions of power imbalance, collective deference to authority figures, and the (potentially) corrosive impact of celebrity culture on contemporary society. The triptych Ghetto Triumvirate (2014) was created specifically for the exhibition Liminal_Narratives, curated by Frances Lindsay AM, and is now available for acquisition.
